Is your child or student an enthusiastic young singer aged 9 to 11 years who experiences feelings of nerves or stage fright in performance situations?
If so, they are warmly invited to participate in an in-person free voice group class and performance research study in term 4 in Brisbane, Queensland.
My name is Rebecca Yarnold, I am an experienced voice and piano teacher and a PHD Candidate at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University. I am passionate about building confidence in musicians, and I am undertaking research on Music Performance Anxiety in child voice students.
This study aims to delve into the perceptions, lived experiences, and social relationships of child voice students as they learn and prepare for performances in a group class setting. The research goal is to explore how these relationships shape their experiences of Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) and to find effective ways to support them.
This research study offers a supportive and encouraging environment for child singers to grow as musicians and develop confidence and performance skills.
During seven weekly sessions, participants will receive six group lessons focused on developing healthy vocal technique. We will also introduce strategies to help students build confidence and utilise techniques for positive performance experiences. The study will culminate in a final performance for family and friends.
Research Criteria for Participants:
- Age Group: 9 to 11 years
- Self-assessed experience of nerves in performance situations
- Available for weekly free group classes on Tuesday afternoon’s 4pm to 5pm in term 4, 2023 commencing Tuesday 3rd October to 14th November 2023
- Available for 3 draw and talk sessions (prior to commencement, towards the end of the group lesson period and again at the end of the research)
- Available for a performance Saturday 19th November 2023
- Lesson and performance location: Brisbane Western Suburbs
There are no foreseeable risks in participating in this research. The decision to take part is voluntary and participants are free to withdraw at any time. Your child’s voice matters, and their participation will contribute to valuable insights that can positively impact young performers everywhere.
